The Nigerian Army has successfully conducted the 2026 1 Division Inter-Brigade Corporal and Below Competition, a key event aimed at bolstering military preparedness and fostering teamwork among personnel. Hosted by the 31 Artillery Brigade in collaboration with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Division Nigerian Army, the competition took place at the Military Cantonment Parade Ground in Minna, Niger State, on April 13, 2026.
Opening Ceremony and Strategic Objectives
Major-General P.P. Mella, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), officially declared the competition open, emphasizing its role in assessing the operational readiness of participating formations and the division as a whole. Represented by Major-General M.A. Abdullahi, General Mella highlighted that this annual event has consistently sharpened the skills of Nigerian Army personnel, enabling them to effectively discharge their constitutional duties.
He explained that the exercise aligns with the Chief of Army Staff's philosophy, which seeks to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force. This transformation is crucial for executing constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment, especially as the military and other security agencies face complex challenges nationwide.
General Mella stressed the importance of cohesion, teamwork, and camaraderie, noting: "Participants are expected to better appreciate team spirit and healthy competition, becoming more professional soldiers capable of achieving common goals. The weakest member of any team must still be stronger than the strongest member of the opposing team to ensure victory."
