Nigerian Troops Recapture Borno Military Base After Intense Battle with Boko Haram
In a significant counter-terrorism operation, Nigerian soldiers have successfully retaken their forward operation base in Ngoshe town, located within Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. This strategic victory comes after days of violent attacks and engagements with Boko Haram insurgents who had previously overrun the military position.
Coordinated Military Operation with Local Support
The successful recapture operation involved close collaboration between the Nigerian military and multiple local support groups. According to military sources, the operation was conducted jointly with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), local vigilante groups, and hunters from the surrounding communities.
A military source detailed the tactical approach, stating: "At least 60 soldiers were left behind, but they later retreated to Pulka when they noticed the movement of a large number of terrorists planning a counter attack. The brigade commander of Gwoza met us in Pulka and assured support. Today, we were able to recapture Ngoshe after engaging the remaining insurgents in a gun battle."
The source confirmed that Ngoshe town is now fully under military control following the successful operation, which resulted in the neutralization of a significant number of Boko Haram fighters.
Recent Attacks and Military Casualties
The recapture operation follows a series of devastating attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in the region. Last week, terrorists launched an assault that claimed the lives of 14 soldiers and numerous civilians, while over 100 women and children were abducted during the attack.
Earlier on Friday, military leadership had taken preliminary steps toward reclaiming the base. The General Commanding Officer reportedly visited Pulka and mobilized approximately 200 troops into the deserted Ngoshe area to assess the situation before launching the final assault.
Recent reports indicate significant losses among military leadership in Borno State, with at least three Commanding Officers at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel recently killed alongside scores of other soldiers. Hundreds of civilians remain in captivity following various insurgent attacks across the region.
Defence Ministry Response to Resurgent Attacks
In response to the recent escalation of insurgent activities, Defence Minister Chris Musa summoned Service Chiefs to Abuja on Wednesday for an emergency strategy review meeting. The retired four-star General addressed the situation before the closed-door session, stating: "We know we have recorded some casualties but it is more on the side of terrorists."
The meeting focused on reviewing current military tactics and developing intensified operational strategies against insurgent groups. Minister Musa emphasized the need to prevent further losses while maintaining pressure on terrorist organizations operating in northeastern Nigeria.
The successful recapture of the Ngoshe military base represents a significant tactical victory for Nigerian forces in their ongoing campaign against Boko Haram. However, security challenges persist in the region, with military leadership continuing to adapt strategies to address the evolving threat posed by insurgent groups in Borno State and surrounding areas.
