Police, Customs Uncover Terrorist Plots Targeting Abuja, Niger, and Ondo
Security agencies in Nigeria have made significant breakthroughs in uncovering terrorist plots across multiple states, with coordinated efforts leading to arrests and heightened alerts. The Ondo State Police Command has successfully foiled a planned bomb attack in Akure, arresting six suspects and seizing materials for improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Simultaneously, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued warnings about credible intelligence indicating planned attacks by terrorist groups in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger State.
Ondo Police Foil Bomb Plot, Arrest Six Suspects
Acting on actionable intelligence, the Ondo State Police Command deployed operatives to the Oke-Odu area of Akure, where they apprehended six individuals allegedly planning to attack government installations using IEDs. The suspects, identified as Adekunle Prosper (56), Ojo Olumide (39), Tope Kolawole (40), Ahmed Salihu (40), Bolaji Adebowale (46), and Gbadebo Abidemi (43), had rented an apartment to serve as their operational base.
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal confirmed that the operation on April 15, 2026, led to the recovery of incriminating items, including:
- 217 bottles and a bag of sugar suspected for IED fabrication
- 17 mobile phones and two HP laptops
- N187,000 in cash and criminal charms
- Two motorcycles and various other exhibits
Lawal described the foiled attack as potentially devastating, emphasizing that preliminary assessments suggest the materials were intended for explosive devices and coordinated criminal activities.
Customs Warn of Coordinated Attacks in FCT and Niger State
In a related development, the Nigeria Customs Service has raised alarms about planned coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). An internal memo from the office of Deputy Comptroller-General T. Bomodi revealed credible intelligence indicating targets such as:
- Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA)
- Kuje Custodial Centre
- Wawa Military Detention Facility in Kainji, Niger State
The Service warned that the objective extends beyond disruption, aiming to free detained fighters and damage critical infrastructure, particularly in the aviation sector.
Stakeholders Call for Urgent Restructuring Amid Security Crisis
Amid these security threats, stakeholders at a symposium organized by the National Association of Public Affairs Analysts (NAPAA) in Ibadan called for urgent restructuring of Nigeria's governance architecture. The event, themed 'Nigeria's Current Challenges and the Way Out', brought together scholars, legal practitioners, and political actors to discuss insecurity, governance failures, and democratic consolidation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chairman Dr. Yemi Farounbi described security as Nigeria's most critical issue, advocating for fundamental restructuring to address structural deficiencies and weak institutions. He argued that Nigeria's challenges stem from a lack of discipline, accountability, and effective institutional structures rather than a shortage of ideas.
Convener Segun Showunmi highlighted the fragility of Nigeria's Fourth Republic, calling for reforms in electoral administration and stronger political party structures. Senior Advocate of Nigeria Niyi Akintola emphasized that insecurity undermines investment, agricultural production, and public resources, while NAPAA officials stressed the benefits of decentralizing power for resource management and security coordination.
These developments underscore the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria, with proactive measures by security agencies complemented by calls for systemic governance reforms to ensure long-term stability and development.
