In a significant gesture of appreciation, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented a substantial donation worth millions of Naira to the state's chapter of the Nigerian Legion. The event, held to launch the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund, took place at the Lagos House in Ikeja.
A Substantial Package for Veterans and Families
The governor's donation package, announced on Monday, is valued at over N100 million. The comprehensive support includes a direct cash donation of N100 million to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion. Beyond the funds, the package features four sets of two-bedroom apartments, two utility vehicles, four cows, and 500 bags of rice, alongside other essential food items.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that these gifts are intended to support the legionnaires—veterans of the Nigerian Armed Forces—and the families of fallen heroes. He reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to their welfare, describing it as a constitutional and moral duty.
Honouring Supreme Sacrifice
Speaking at the launch event within the State Executive Council Chamber, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the profound importance of the annual emblem appeal. He noted that it is a national tradition leading up to the January 15 commemoration, a day dedicated to honouring military personnel who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria.
"Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women," the governor declared. "This emblem appeal is a responsibility we owe to those who laid down their lives for Nigeria and those who returned with life-changing injuries. It is customary to accede to the yearly requests of the Nigerian Legion."
Legion Leadership Expresses Gratitude
The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Lagos State, Mr. Hakeem Wolimoh, warmly commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state government for their consistent support over the years. Wolimoh highlighted that interventions from the Lagos government have immensely benefited the Legion's members, significantly improving living conditions for veterans and their dependents.
The high-profile event was attended by a broad spectrum of Lagos State officials and security chiefs, including:
- Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat
- Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin
- Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro
- Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, Moshood Jimoh
- Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Owolabi
- Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN)
The launch sets the stage for the official Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities scheduled for January 15, 2026, across Nigeria.
