Anambra Police Command Raises Alarm Over Escalating Trend of Masked Security Personnel Guarding VIPs

The Anambra State Police Command has issued a stark warning regarding a disturbing surge in the number of security operatives who are concealing their identities while providing protection services to Very Important Personalities (VIPs) across the state. This development, according to authorities, presents a significant threat to public safety and the integrity of coordinated security efforts.

Security Concerns and Public Safety Implications

While acknowledging that certain tactical operations may require discretion, the police command emphasized that the unauthorized masking of identities during routine or protective duties is unacceptable. Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, articulated that such practices not only jeopardize public safety but also erode trust, accountability, and the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration.

"The use of masks by operatives, particularly in non-operational or public-facing assignments such as VIP protection, makes it extremely difficult to verify their legitimacy," Ikenga stated. "This ambiguity could be exploited by criminal elements to carry out unlawful activities under the pretense of performing security duties, thereby compromising the safety of citizens and VIPs alike."

Commissioner of Police Issues Directive on Identifiable Personnel

In response to this growing concern, the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has reiterated that identifiable security personnel are a fundamental component of effective and coordinated security operations. This is especially critical in an environment that demands seamless synergy among various security agencies to maintain law and order.

The Commissioner has called on all security agencies operating within Anambra State to ensure that their personnel are properly identified at all times while on routine or protective duties. The only exception to this rule should be in clearly defined tactical operations that have been sanctioned by the appropriate authorities.

Commitment to Professionalism and Public Trust

Ikenga further emphasized that the Anambra State Police Command remains unwavering in its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and public trust in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities. The command is dedicated to fostering a secure environment where all security operations are transparent and accountable to the public they serve.

This alarm comes as part of broader efforts to enhance security coordination and prevent potential abuses that could arise from unverified security personnel operating within the state. The police urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving masked individuals claiming to be security operatives.
