Borno Police Arrest 2,610 Suspects, Recover Arms

The Borno State Police Command has announced a significant crackdown on crime for the year 2025, resulting in the arrest of over 2,600 suspects and the recovery of illicit arms, cash, and other items.

Major Arrests and Convictions in 2025

According to a statement released in Maiduguri by the command's spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso, a total of 2,610 individuals were apprehended for various crimes, including gender-based violence. Out of these cases, the command successfully investigated, prosecuted, and secured convictions for 1,028 of them. ASP Daso attributed this high success rate to improved investigative skills and diligent prosecution efforts by police officers throughout the year.

Recoveries and Rescues from Operations

The police operations yielded substantial recoveries of dangerous items and stolen property. The seized contraband included:

  • 8 assorted firearms and 54 rounds of ammunition.
  • 41 cutlasses and knives taken from suspects.
  • 9 unexploded ordnances and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which were safely detonated to protect the public.
  • 27 stolen vehicles and 187 mobile phones, currently undergoing verification for return to their rightful owners.

In a critical victory against kidnapping, 18 abducted victims were successfully rescued through coordinated police actions in targeted communities across the state.

Disrupting Drug Networks and Future Strategy

In a major blow to narcotics trafficking, the command confiscated a large cache of hard drugs and illicit substances valued at N5.77 million. This seizure is seen as a direct disruption to drug distribution networks operating within Borno and its border communities with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid, the 43rd Commissioner for the state who assumed office on June 8, 2025, acknowledged the complex security landscape in Borno. He credited the 2025 achievements to the existing operational foundation, continuity, and the collective resilience and professionalism of the officers and men under his command.

Looking ahead to 2026, CP Abdulmajid stated that the command will prioritize intelligence-led policing as its core strategy for preventing and detecting crime. ASP Daso added that the police plan to strengthen collaborations with sister security agencies, community stakeholders, and relevant partners to ensure a coordinated and proactive response to the state's security challenges.
