Delta Police Command Launches Disciplinary Action Against Officers in PoS Extortion Scandal
The Delta State Police Command has officially commenced disciplinary proceedings against two of its officers who were captured in a widely circulated viral video allegedly extorting money from a motorist using a Point of Sale (PoS) machine. This incident occurred within the premises of the 'C' Division Police Station in Asaba, the state capital, and has sparked significant public outrage and embarrassment for the force.
Details of the Incident and Official Response
According to a statement released by the command's spokesperson, Mr. Bright Edafe, the event took place on January 13, 2026, and quickly gained attention after the footage was shared online. Edafe described the actions of the officers as embarrassing, unprofessional, and conduct unbecoming of police personnel, emphasizing that such behavior undermines public trust and the integrity of the police force.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Mr. Yemi Oyeniyi, has aligned with the directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, which strictly prohibits any form of extortion and the use of PoS machines or other electronic payment platforms within police formations. Edafe reiterated that no officer is permitted to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, highlighting the command's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and abuse of office.
Officers Identified and Disciplinary Process Underway
The officers facing disciplinary action have been identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. Their orderly room trial is already in progress, and the command has assured the public that the outcome of this internal disciplinary process will be made public upon its conclusion. This move is part of broader efforts to ensure accountability and transparency within the police force.
In his warning, Commissioner Oyeniyi cautioned all officers and men of the command against engaging in extortion, abuse of office, or any other forms of misconduct, stating that such acts would attract severe sanctions. He urged personnel to discharge their duties professionally, respect the fundamental human rights of citizens, and uphold the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
Commitment to Deterrence and Public Engagement
The statement noted that the disciplinary measures are expected to serve as a deterrent to other officers, reinforcing the command's commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct. Additionally, the command commended members of the public who exposed the misconduct, encouraging residents to continue reporting cases of police abuse and unethical behavior.
To facilitate this, the Delta State Police Command has encouraged the public to utilize its Complaint Response Unit through dedicated phone lines. This initiative aims to foster a culture of accountability and restore public confidence in policing across the state. The command reiterated its dedication to discipline, accountability, and rebuilding trust with the community, ensuring that such incidents are addressed promptly and effectively to uphold the rule of law and ethical policing practices.
