Residents of Bagudo in Kebbi State were thrown into a state of alarm in the early hours of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, following a loud explosion at the local General Hospital.
Security Forces Swiftly Secure Area
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that a joint security response was immediately activated. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, teams comprising police, military, and vigilante personnel cordoned off the area to prevent any further threat.
Crucially, operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit were deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough assessment and ensure the area was safe from additional explosives.
No Lives Lost in Early Morning Blast
Authorities have expressed relief that the incident did not result in any loss of life. SP Usman clarified that the explosion damaged a building within the hospital's staff quarters, but the occupants had already evacuated before the blast occurred.
"We are grateful to confirm that there were no casualties," Usman stated, offering reassurance to the public. The Commissioner of Police has ordered additional tactical deployments to the area to maintain order and reassure anxious residents.
Investigation Launched, Cause Yet Unknown
The police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid the immediate vicinity of the hospital to allow security operatives to work effectively.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of security challenges in Kebbi State. Recent months have seen attacks by gunmen, including an assault on a Nigeria Immigration Service checkpoint in November that left three officers dead, and the kidnapping of the state's Deputy Speaker, Samaila Bagudu, in October 2025.
As of now, the police are treating the hospital explosion as an isolated event while investigations continue, promising to provide further updates as necessary.
