IGP Disu Issues Sweeping Directive to End Police Misconduct Nationwide

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has issued a comprehensive directive to Commissioners of Police across Nigeria, mandating an immediate halt to extortion, illegal checkpoints, harassment of citizens, and other forms of misconduct. He emphasized that rebuilding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force is now a critical operational priority.

Directive Targets Deep-Rooted Issues

The order was communicated through a signal to the police management team, including Commissioners of Police and operational commanders. In a strongly worded message, IGP Disu acknowledged the profound mistrust many Nigerians harbor toward police officers, labeling it as "painful" and unacceptable. He noted that citizens often fear encounters with the police as much as they fear criminals, warning that such a damaging reputation will not be tolerated under his leadership.

According to the IGP, this directive initiates a determined effort to restore discipline within the force and re-establish its legitimacy in the public eye. Specific prohibitions include the routine collection of money from motorists on highways, the operation of unauthorized checkpoints, and the practice of arresting individuals to force cash withdrawals from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

Condemnation of Abuse and Dress Code Enforcement

IGP Disu also condemned the misuse of officers for private duties in homes and businesses, describing such deployments as an abuse of authority and a violation of existing presidential directives on VIP protection. Additionally, officers are directed to strictly comply with approved dress codes, maintain clean-shaven appearances, and adhere to uniform regulations.

Tribute to Predecessor Egbetokun

In a related development, IGP Disu paid a glowing tribute to his predecessor, Adeolu Egbetokun, for his contributions to the development of modern policing in Nigeria. Disu made these remarks in a speech delivered at a grand reception organized by the Yewa Peoples Development Council in collaboration with the Yewa Traditional Council over the weekend in Ilaro, Ogun State.

The event honored Egbetokun, the 22nd indigenous IGP and the first from Ogun State. Represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police Olohundare Jimoh of Zone 2, Onikan, Disu spoke on the theme "Celebrating A Life of Service, Integrity and Leadership: The Smartest and Mathematical IGP," describing the retired police chief as a prominent, highly successful, and eminent son of Yewaland.
