A tragic incident involving police officers in Rivers State has resulted in the death of one officer and left another injured after an accidental discharge of a firearm.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The event unfolded on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Next Cash and Carry Supermart located in the Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt. According to preliminary reports, the shooter has been identified as Inspector Victor Okus, an officer attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) but on special duty at Intels in Onne.

At the time of the incident, Inspector Okus was inside a vehicle with two colleagues: Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda. Both victims were officers from the 14 PMF, Yola, who were on a joint guard duty assignment with military personnel at the location.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Inspector Okus allegedly mishandled his firearm, leading to an accidental discharge. The stray bullets struck his two colleagues in critical areas, specifically the head and neck.

Response and Consequences

The injured officers were rushed immediately to Nopsam Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Inspector Ibrahim Sani succumbed to his injuries. Inspector Daniel Dauda survived and is currently receiving ongoing medical care.

The body of the deceased officer has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy procedures.

The Rivers State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday. The command expressed deep sadness over the loss of Inspector Sani, describing him as a dedicated officer.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The police high command aims to ensure a thorough examination of this regrettable event.

CSP Iringe-Koko stated that the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, has been arrested and is currently in police custody. He will first face an Orderly Room Trial, which is the internal disciplinary procedure within the Nigeria Police Force, and will subsequently be charged to court for prosecution.

In the official statement, the Commissioner of Police used the incident to remind all officers of the serious responsibility that comes with handling firearms while on duty. He advised that it is not a routine task and emphasized the crucial need to prioritize the safety of oneself and others to prevent such potential tragedies.
