Nigeria Police Initiate Disciplinary Measures Against Officer in Viral Video
The Nigeria Police Force has launched a formal investigation and disciplinary proceedings against a sergeant captured in a viral video behaving erratically in Ekiti State. The officer, assigned to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters, was seen in the footage rolling on the ground and holding onto a bench in a public area, appearing to be under the influence of an unknown substance.
Police authorities confirmed on social media that the sergeant was identified and taken into custody shortly after the video circulated widely on Saturday. The Ekiti State Police Command has assumed control of the case to ensure adherence to internal regulations.
Medical and Psychological Evaluation Ordered
Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has mandated a comprehensive medical and psychological assessment for the sergeant before the disciplinary trial proceeds. This step aims to determine whether any health issues or substance use contributed to the behavior. Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Okon stated that the evaluation is a standard prerequisite to the formal disciplinary process, ensuring both the conduct violation and potential underlying concerns are addressed responsibly.
The statement read: “The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has directed a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer. This assessment is a mandatory prerequisite to the formal disciplinary process, ensuring that the Force addresses both the conduct violation and any underlying health concerns in a thorough and responsible manner.”
Inspector-General Condemns Conduct
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu strongly condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as a gross violation of the Force’s standards. He reiterated the commitment to maintaining professionalism and decorum among personnel. The police high command stated that substance abuse or any behavior damaging the institution’s reputation will not be tolerated.
The leadership emphasized that every officer must uphold the integrity of the uniform at all times. This case underscores the zero-tolerance policy toward conduct that erodes public trust. The outcome of the medical evaluation will determine the next steps in the sergeant’s orderly room trial.
