Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Grants Clemency to 77 Inmates for New Year 2026
Aiyedatiwa Frees 12, Commutes Sentences for 65 Inmates

In a significant New Year gesture, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has extended mercy to seventy-seven individuals incarcerated across the state's correctional facilities. The governor's decision, announced on Thursday, January 1, 2026, is rooted in the spirit of renewal and second chances that defines the season.

Details of the Governor's Clemency Order

Acting on the official recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Governor Aiyedatiwa approved a comprehensive clemency order. The council, which is chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, conducted a meticulous review of each case. According to a statement issued by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the council considered multiple factors including the nature of the crimes, time already served, conduct in custody, age, health status, and prospects for successful reintegration into society.

Breakdown of the Prisoner Release and Sentence Reductions

The clemency resulted in two primary forms of relief for the convicts. Firstly, twelve inmates who demonstrated exemplary behaviour and had completed substantial portions of their jail terms were granted outright release and will walk free.

Secondly, the sentences of sixty-five other convicts were commuted to lesser terms:

  • Twenty-two inmates
  • Other prisoners serving life sentences had their terms significantly reduced to 25, 20, 15, and 10 years, respectively, based on individual assessments.

Emphasis on Rehabilitation and Justice Reform

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the act was intended for inmates who had shown genuine remorse and a commitment to change. The statement described the move as a "compassionate gesture" that reflects profound mercy and forward-thinking leadership. It highlighted the administration's focus on rehabilitation over mere punishment.

This exercise is also seen as a concrete step towards the governor's stated goals of reforming the justice sector and alleviating congestion in correctional centres. By offering a path to redemption, the government aims to foster hope and encourage reform among those who have erred but are willing to become productive citizens again.
