Visitor Arrested for Attempting to Smuggle Illicit Drugs into Ibadan Prison
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Oyo State Command, has successfully intercepted and arrested a visitor who attempted to smuggle suspected hard drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre located in Agodi, Ibadan. This incident underscores ongoing efforts to maintain security within correctional facilities across the state.
Details of the Arrest and Concealment Method
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, by Mr. Olanrewaju Anjorin, the Public Relations Officer for the Command, the male visitor was apprehended during routine security checks at the facility's entrance. These checks are standard procedure for all visitors and their belongings to prevent unauthorized items from entering the prison.
Mr. Anjorin revealed that the suspect, who claimed to be visiting an inmate, was found to have cleverly concealed substances suspected to be Colorado and hemp inside a portion of cooked rice and pasta. This method of concealment highlights the lengths to which individuals may go to bypass security measures.
Investigation and Handover to Authorities
Further investigation into the matter uncovered inconsistencies in the suspect's stated purpose for the visit, suggesting a deliberate attempt to evade detection. As a result, the suspect has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. This collaboration between agencies aims to ensure that such unlawful acts are thoroughly addressed and perpetrators are held accountable.
Commendation and Commitment to Security
Mr. Olusegun Osogun, the Controller of Corrections for the NCoS Oyo State Command, commended the officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism in thwarting the smuggling attempt. He reaffirmed the Service's unwavering commitment to ensuring the security, safety, and integrity of all custodial centres in Oyo State, emphasizing that such incidents will not be tolerated.
In his statement, Mr. Anjorin also urged the public to cooperate with Correctional Service authorities and refrain from engaging in unlawful activities. This call to action serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility in maintaining order and safety within correctional environments.
The arrest highlights the critical role of routine security checks in preventing contraband from entering prisons, thereby protecting both inmates and staff from potential harm associated with drug-related activities.
