Edo Police Clarifies Viral Video of Officers Restraining Man

The Edo State Police Command has issued a clarification regarding a widely circulated video showing its officers pinning a man down on the road. In a statement released by the command's spokesperson, SP Eno Ikoedem, investigations revealed that the young man in the video, identified as David Michael, 23, was experiencing a medical emergency and had gone into convulsions.

Police Explanation of the Incident

According to the statement, during the episode, the man became violent and difficult to restrain, posing a danger to himself and others nearby. The police officers at the scene were making efforts to control the situation, prevent harm, and urgently convey him to a medical facility for immediate attention.

“Unfortunately, a portion of the incident was recorded from a distance by an onlooker who was not fully aware of the events leading up to the intervention. This partial recording and misleading narrative has understandably generated public concern and misinterpretation. All those responsible for the video, including David Michael, have made another video clarifying the circumstances of the former. It is hoped that the latter video will enjoy the same wide circulation as the former,” she said.
