Six passengers, including four serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), were burnt to death in a tragic auto crash along the Narehi area of Girei-Song Local Council in Adamawa State. The incident involved a military gun truck traveling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi.
Police Confirm Fatalities
The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed that four of the victims were NYSC members posted to the state. SP Suleiman Yahaya Ngoroje, the command's spokesperson, stated in a release that preliminary findings indicated a head-on collision between the two vehicles, causing the commercial bus to somersault and burst into flames.
“All five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision. Preliminary identification reveals that four of the deceased were serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State,” Ngoroje said.
He added, “The Command further confirmed that a military personnel attached to the military vehicle also lost his life as a result of the crash.”
Emergency Response
Ngoroje noted that police operatives, in collaboration with other emergency responders, promptly arrived at the scene and evacuated the corpses to the Specialist Hospital in Yola. Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining bodies and locate their families.
The Commissioner of Police for Adamawa State Command, Kabir Umar Hassan, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC, and all others affected by the incident.
