A Nigerian woman named Chukwujama Nemenma has shared a distressing experience of sexual harassment and physical assault at the Onitsha Main Market, describing it as one of the worst moments of her life.
Incident at the Market
The health worker took to Facebook on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, to narrate her ordeal, tagging Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo. According to her, she was in the crowded market when a man inappropriately touched her breast. She screamed at him, and in response, he slapped her.
“One of the worst things that ever happened to me in my life was someone slapping me in Main Market Onitsha because I screamed at him for touching my breast,” she wrote.
Lack of Support from Bystanders
What made the situation even more troubling, she said, was the reaction of the men around. Instead of intervening, they supported the assailant and encouraged him to slap her again. Feeling helpless, she chose to walk away.
“The worst thing about that day is that the men around there supported him and told him to slap me again. I just walked away,” she added.
Call for Government Action
Nemenma highlighted the alarming frequency of sexual harassment faced by women at the Onitsha Main Market. She urged the Anambra State government to address these inappropriate behaviors and ensure the safety of women in public spaces.
“The number of women who are sexually harassed on a daily basis in Main Market Onitsha is alarming. I wish the government of Anambra State will look into all these inappropriate behaviors,” she stated, directly appealing to Governor Charles Soludo.
The post has sparked conversations online about the need for stricter measures against sexual harassment and violence in markets and other public places.
