Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Two Lives in Kwara Quarry Lake
The Kwara State Fire Service has confirmed the recovery of the bodies of two young men who tragically drowned in a quarry lake located in the Opete area of Asa Local Government Area. This devastating incident occurred on the evening of Monday, March 23, 2026, casting a shadow over the local community.
Emergency Response and Recovery Operation
Hassan Adekunle, the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, disclosed the details in an official statement released on Tuesday. According to Adekunle, fire fighters were alerted to the emergency at approximately 5:08 p.m., leading to an immediate and rapid deployment to the quarry site.
"The incident involved two young men who reportedly drowned while at the quarry site. Upon arrival, firefighters conducted a recovery operation and successfully retrieved the bodies of the victims," Hassan stated. The deceased have been identified as Fatai Abdulraman, aged 26, and Muhammed Awal, aged 27. Following the recovery, the bodies were handed over to Mallam Abdulfatahi for further necessary arrangements.
Official Condolences and Safety Warnings
In response to this heartbreaking tragedy, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He also issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to avoid unsafe water bodies such as quarry lakes, which pose significant hidden dangers.
"These quarry lakes are often deeper than they appear and can be extremely dangerous due to their unstable nature. Members of the public must prioritise safety at all times and avoid unnecessary risks," Muhammed emphasized. He further called on communities to take proactive measures by restricting access to hazardous sites and ensuring that emergencies are reported without delay to facilitate prompt intervention.
