A devastating collision between a minibus taxi and a truck in South Africa's Gauteng province has claimed the lives of 13 schoolchildren, with an eyewitness providing a harrowing account of the reckless driving that led to the tragedy.
Eyewitness Account of the Fatal Moments
The fatal accident occurred on the morning of Monday, January 19, 2026, along the Golden Highway between Bophelong and Sebokeng near Vanderbijlpark. A minibus taxi, transporting pupils to various schools, collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
An eyewitness, speaking to Newzroom Afrika, described how the minibus driver initiated a dangerous overtaking maneuver. The witness stated he slowed down to allow the taxi to return to its lane safely, but the driver continued the overtake despite a truck approaching from the opposite direction.
"The truck driver tried to avoid the collision by swerving towards the road's edge, but the taxi reportedly followed the same path, leading to a violent impact," the witness recounted. The crash left debris, school books, and bags scattered across the highway, painting a grim picture of the scene.
Police Investigation and Charges
South African police have opened a case encompassing 13 counts of culpable homicide. Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that preliminary investigations revealed a critical safety breach: the transport vehicle was significantly overloaded.
The minibus, with an approved capacity for 14 passengers, was carrying 18 occupants at the time of the crash. Authorities initially confirmed 11 fatalities at the scene, with two children succumbing to their injuries later in the hospital. Masondo indicated that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be considered.
Community in Mourning and Official Response
The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed profound condolences to the families, schools, and communities shattered by the loss. The incident has been described as a devastating blow, leaving classrooms and households in deep mourning.
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities have renewed urgent calls for strict adherence to road safety regulations, particularly for vehicles tasked with transporting children. The grieving father of a 17-year-old victim publicly rejected the notion that the event was a mere accident, calling it a preventable tragedy.
Emergency responders worked diligently at the chaotic scene to assist survivors. Investigators are now focused on questioning the drivers involved and examining the vehicles' conditions to fully establish responsibility for one of the region's most heartbreaking road accidents.
