18 Killed in Jigawa Road Accident on Dutse-Kiyawa Road

A somber mood has enveloped Jigawa State following a horrific road accident that claimed the lives of at least 18 people on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. The multiple-vehicle crash occurred along the busy Dutse–Kiyawa Road, casting a shadow over the New Year celebrations.

Details of the Tragic Collision

The fatal incident happened around 12:20 PM at Danmasara Quarters. According to the Jigawa State Police Command, the accident involved two Golf 3 vehicles and a tipper truck. The vehicles bore the registration numbers KYW 500 XA, RAN 836 XA, and BUU 289 XA.

An eyewitness, Abdullahi Idris from Danmasara Quarters, provided a chilling account. "I saw a white Golf 3 vehicle lose control, hit a streetlight, and then collide head-on with another Golf 3 coming from the opposite direction," he recounted. "A tipper truck then crushed the two vehicles. It was a horrific scene."

Another resident, Muhammad Ibrahim, pointed to excessive speed as the likely cause. "The vehicles were speeding when the white Golf 3 lost control. The impact was massive, and people were trapped inside. I heard screams and cries for help," he explained.

Police Confirmation and Victim Profile

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, officially confirmed the tragedy. He stated that 16 people died instantly at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Two more victims are receiving treatment in critical condition.

SP Adam provided crucial details about the victims, noting that preliminary investigations revealed the deceased comprised 10 males and 8 females. He confirmed that most, if not all, of the victims were from Fa'ke village in the Kiyawa Local Government Area. This detail was corroborated by a female eyewitness, Fatima Hassan, who said she recognized many of the victims from the village.

The Commissioner of Police has extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured that efforts are ongoing to formally identify all victims and notify their next of kin. The police have also launched a full investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash.

A State in Mourning: A Second Tragedy in Days

This devastating event marks the second major road tragedy in Jigawa State within a week, deepening the sense of loss. Just days earlier, on Christmas Day, another accident at Beguwa village along Sankara Road in Ringim LGA claimed 11 lives and left nine others injured.

In light of these consecutive tragedies, the police have issued a strong appeal to motorists. SP Adam urged drivers to exercise utmost caution, particularly on high-traffic routes like the Dutse–Kiyawa Road. "We urge motorists to exercise caution on our roads. Speeding and reckless driving are suspected factors, but investigation will determine the exact cause," he emphasized.

The police have deployed officers to manage the aftermath of the crash, clear the scene, and ensure the free flow of traffic to prevent further incidents. The community of Fa'ke village and the wider Jigawa State are now left to mourn this immense loss as the New Year begins on a note of profound grief.
