Akin Fadeyi Foundation Launches National Campaign to Reduce Road Accidents in Nigeria

The Akin Fadeyi Foundation has initiated a nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging Nigerians to adopt safer road behaviors. This campaign was officially launched on February 17, 2026, during a press conference that saw attendance from political figures, high-ranking law enforcement officials, and civil society leaders.

Campaign Details and Objectives

The foundation's new behavioral change campaign includes a one-minute advocacy drama produced in collaboration with Nollywood actors. This short film is designed to emotionally engage citizens and promote a shift in public consciousness, moving away from viewing road accidents as inevitable fate and towards recognizing them as preventable incidents caused by reckless behavior.

Executive Director Akin Fadeyi emphasized that the majority of road accidents in Nigeria could be avoided if citizens changed their driving habits. He highlighted common infractions such as overspeeding, improper overtaking, driving under impairment, illegal parking, and overloading, stating that these are behavioral issues rather than accidents.

Collaboration and Data Insights

The foundation has partnered with key agencies including the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigerian Police Force to enhance the campaign's reach and effectiveness. Fadeyi cited data from the Federal Road Safety Corps showing that in 2025, Nigeria recorded 10,446 road crashes, resulting in 38,689 casualties and 5,289 deaths. This represents a 9.2 percent increase from the previous year, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Fadeyi stressed that while enforcement is important, personal responsibility is critical in solving the road safety crisis. He called on all Nigerians, including faith communities, private organizations, and media outlets, to share and amplify the campaign across various platforms to foster a culture of safety.

Foundation's Track Record and Initiatives

Since its establishment in 2016, the Akin Fadeyi Foundation has been active in promoting ethical behavior and accountability through citizen-centered storytelling and partnerships. Notable initiatives include the widely acclaimed "Corruption Not in My Country" series and civic tech tools like the FlagIt App.

The foundation has also trained over 2,200 officers from the Nigerian Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corps in service delivery and ethics. Additionally, its radio platform, "Make We Sama Corruption," has aired more than 200 episodes, reaching communities across the nation.

Future Goals and Impact

During the campaign launch, participants emphasized that sustainable transformation begins with individuals, not just institutions or governments. Fadeyi echoed this sentiment, advocating for collective vigilance and shared responsibility to ensure road safety becomes a cultural norm in Nigeria.

He concluded by expressing hope that with national solidarity, Nigeria can move towards a future where every journey is safe, every life is valued, and road safety is ingrained in society as a fundamental practice rather than merely a rule to follow.
