Ogun Government's Reaction to the Tragic Incident
In an official statement released on Monday, December 29, 2025, the state government, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones. The government described the event as a "devastating loss" and stated it is in a mourning mood, praying for the souls of the departed and the swift recovery of the injured.
The statement was issued by Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, and confirmed the accident occurred along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically around the Makun axis in Ogun State.
How the Anthony Joshua Accident Happened
According to preliminary reports, the 36-year-old boxing icon was travelling from Lagos to Sagamu with three other individuals when the Lexus SUV they were in collided with a stationary truck. The impact of the crash was severe.
Two male foreign nationals lost their lives on the spot. Their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were promptly rescued by security personnel from the boxer's convoy and rushed to a hospital where they are receiving treatment for minor injuries.
The severely damaged SUV has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office. Authorities are working to tow the involved truck to the same location to enable a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash.
Government Issues Safety Warning to Motorists
Labeling the incident as "deeply unfortunate and painful," the Ogun State government used the opportunity to issue a stern warning on road safety, especially during the festive period.
The government urged all motorists to exercise utmost caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations, noting that vehicular movement is typically heavier at this time. It also directed road safety officers and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement across the state to protect lives and property.
