The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a fresh safety advisory following a tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, which claimed two lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident has drawn high-level visits from British diplomatic officials and state governors to the hospital where the boxer is receiving treatment.
High-Profile Hospital Visit Following Tragic Crash
Deputy Head of Mission at the British High Commission, Simon Field, personally visited Anthony Joshua at a hospital in Lagos. The visit, confirmed in a statement by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor, occurred on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. Field also held discussions with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who were both present at the medical facility.
The British High Commission confirmed it was formally notified of the accident. Officials stated they are closely monitoring developments and remain in contact with both the hospital and the Ogun State Government. The commission has also assisted in contacting the families of the two British citizens who lost their lives in the collision.
Details of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident
The fatal road traffic crash occurred around midday on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. Joshua was traveling in a Toyota Lexus SUV with three other passengers. Tragically, two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen.
- Gami Sina, also 36, a British citizen.
Governor Dapo Abiodun was the first to visit the Lagos hospital where Joshua was admitted. He was later joined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both state executives reportedly spent several hours at the hospital to oversee the boxer's care and ensure he received the necessary medical attention.
FRSC Reiterates Yuletide Safety Warning
In the wake of the crash, the Federal Road Safety Corps has intensified its call for careful driving during the festive period. The Zonal Commanding Officer for Lagos and Ogun states, Assistant Corps Marshal Ann Oladayo, issued the warning during a follow-up visit to the accident scene.
Oladayo, who supervised FRSC officers in clearing the wreckage, urged all motorists to strictly adhere to speed limits. "As we drive on the highways, safety should be our watchword all the time," she emphasized. The officer extended the corps's condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a full and speedy recovery.
