Lagos Unveils 18-Week Traffic Diversion Plan for Mazamaza Bridge Repairs
Lagos Announces Traffic Plan for Mazamaza Bridge Works

The Lagos State Government has rolled out a comprehensive traffic management strategy in anticipation of major maintenance works on the crucial Mazamaza Bridge. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, via an official statement released on Friday.

Phased Rehabilitation Schedule and Duration

The extensive repair project is scheduled to run for a total of eighteen weeks, from Monday, January 19, to Thursday, May 28. Commissioner Osiyemi assured residents that the bridge will not be completely shut down at any point. Instead, traffic flow will be strategically managed through diversions between the toll lane, the BRT corridor, and the service lane.

The works will be executed in distinct phases. A preliminary phase is set for Saturday, January 24, to Friday, January 30. The core rehabilitation will then proceed in two major blocks. Phases one to four, targeting the Badagry-bound carriageway, will last eight weeks from Saturday, January 31, to Monday, March 30. Subsequently, phases five to eight will focus on the Lagos-bound side for nine weeks, from Tuesday, March 31, to Tuesday, June 2.

Detailed Diversion Routes for Motorists

For motorists heading towards Badagry during phases one and two (toll lane repairs), all traffic will be temporarily redirected onto the BRT corridor. Vehicles will exit this corridor and rejoin the main toll lane approximately 50 metres past the active work zone.

When work shifts to the BRT corridor itself, traffic will be moved onto the toll lane, regaining access to the BRT corridor 50 meters beyond the construction area. During repairs on the Badagry-bound service lane (phases three and four), traffic will be condensed from two lanes to one as vehicles approach the work site on Mazamaza Bridge.

Lagos-Bound Traffic Adjustments

The same pattern will be mirrored for traffic coming into Lagos. During phases five and six, Lagos-bound traffic on the toll lane will be diverted to the BRT corridor, rejoining the main lane 50 meters past the site. For service lane repairs in phases seven and eight, the approach will again involve a lane reduction to one lane near the work zone.

Osiyemi emphasised that throughout all phases, motorists will regain full use of the road immediately after passing the designated work areas to continue their journeys uninterrupted.

Appeal for Cooperation and Compliance

The Transportation Commissioner issued a strong appeal to all road users. He urged motorists to strictly adhere to all installed traffic signs and follow the directives of officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other relevant agencies.

This cooperation is deemed essential for ensuring minimal disruption and maintaining smooth traffic movement throughout the lengthy rehabilitation period on this vital segment of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.
