Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly expressed his condolences and provided a crucial update following a tragic road accident involving former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

The incident occurred near Sagamu in Ogun State along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement posted on his official Instagram page on December 29, 2025, confirmed the devastating news that the collision claimed the lives of two British nationals who were travelling with the sports icon.
The governor described the event as a tragic accident where the vehicle carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. He extended the sympathies of both the Lagos State Government and its citizens to the bereaved families. "On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased. I pray that God grants them the strength to bear this painful loss," Sanwo-Olu stated.
Medical Condition of Anthony Joshua and Ongoing Care
Providing reassurance to the public, Governor Sanwo-Olu gave a positive update on the health of Anthony Joshua and another injured passenger. He confirmed that both individuals were swiftly evacuated from the crash scene to a specialised medical facility in Lagos for urgent attention.
Following multiple clinical evaluations, doctors have reported that both patients are in stable condition and do not currently require any emergency medical procedures. The governor emphasized that a comprehensive medical team has been assembled to monitor their recovery closely and ensure they receive the highest standard of care.
"I am informed that Anthony Joshua is conscious and relating well with his family," Sanwo-Olu added, noting that the boxer is alert and in communication with his loved ones.
