A senior British journalist has voiced his profound alarm at the perilous driving culture he witnessed on Nigeria's Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, following the site of the tragic accident involving former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
Journalist's Stark Assessment at Crash Scene
Nick Pisa, a global reporter for the UK's Daily Mail, reported from the scene in Makun, Ogun State, on Thursday, January 1, 2026. He expressed total shock at the recklessness displayed by motorists on the busy highway, just days after the crash that claimed two lives.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, when the black Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, 36, ploughed into a stationary truck. The crash tragically killed the boxer's two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Joshua and the driver survived and received treatment in Lagos.
'Absolutely Crazy' Driving on a Good Road
Speaking beside the highway, Pisa lamented the blatant disregard for safety. "The driving discipline here is absolutely atrocious," he stated. He observed vehicles flouting the 100 km/h speed limit, overtaking dangerously, and driving the wrong way on the hard shoulder.
Pisa was particularly concerned by pedestrians "literally taking their lives into their own hands" to dodge the thundering traffic. He also noted overloaded cars and trucks. Ironically, he praised the road's physical condition, stating it was something "highways in England would be proud of" with very few potholes, concluding that "it's the driving that is absolutely crazy."
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations
Meanwhile, the driver of the Lexus involved in the fatal crash has been taken into police custody. Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Command, confirmed the arrest on January 1, stating the driver is being held as investigations continue.
Anthony Joshua, who was visiting family in Nigeria, has received widespread support from the boxing world. He was preparing to resume training for a potential March fight in Saudi Arabia against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, ahead of a proposed showdown with Tyson Fury later in 2026.
