Boko Haram Terrorists Launch Coordinated Attack on Borno's Debiro Community

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have carried out a devastating attack on the Debiro community in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in significant destruction of infrastructure and property. The assault occurred on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at approximately 3:30 PM, when approximately forty attackers arrived on sixteen motorcycles, cunningly disguised as local vigilantes.

Deceptive Tactics and Failed Attempt to Gather Residents

According to a resident who spoke to Channels Television on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the terrorists attempted to deceive the community by wearing vigilante uniforms. Their strategy involved trying to gather members of the community who had fled into the bush into one location before launching their attack. However, this plan was thwarted by the rocky terrain of Debiro, which prevented the attackers from pursuing residents on their motorcycles.

Although no lives were lost in this failed mission, the insurgents proceeded to inflict substantial damage. They set fire to a church, approximately twenty-five houses, large quantities of foodstuffs, and all available vehicles found within the community. This destruction has left residents traumatized and fearful, particularly after enjoying a period of relative peace over the past year.

Community Impact and Resident Testimony

The resident expressed the community's shock and anxiety, stating, "After a successful harvest, almost all have not transported their food items to Biu, thinking peace has returned, until suddenly this attack of last Sunday. They came in disguise, wearing vigilantes’ uniforms, and they wanted to gather people who ran into the bush before launching an attack. Looking at the rocky nature of our community, they could not pursue us with their motorcycles."

Debiro, an agrarian community located about forty-eight kilometers from Biu, the headquarters of Biu Local Government Area, has been severely affected by this violence. The attack has disrupted the local economy and created a climate of fear among residents who had begun to believe that stability was returning to the region.

Context of Recent Violence in Borno State

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence in the area. In the two weeks preceding the Debiro attack, Boko Haram insurgents had targeted Harang and Tarfa communities, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a pastor. These consecutive assaults highlight the ongoing security challenges facing Borno State and the need for continued vigilance and protective measures.

The attack on Debiro serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups in northeastern Nigeria, despite periods of calm. It underscores the importance of enhanced security protocols and community awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
