The Islamic State group (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the killing of at least 29 people in Guyaku community, Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The terror group announced the attack on its Telegram channel, as reported by Reuters.
Details of the Attack
According to the group, its fighters killed Christians, destroyed a church, and burned nearly 100 motorcycles. The attack occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when militants raided a football pitch where people had gathered. They opened fire indiscriminately, then set houses, places of worship, and motorcycles ablaze.
Residents reported that many victims were young people at the local football pitch. Philip Agabus, a community resident, told AFP that the insurgents stormed the gathering and began shooting indiscriminately, killing youths and spectators. Another resident, Joshua Usman, narrated that houses of worship, homes, and motorcycles were set on fire during the prolonged assault.
Governor's Response
State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri shared photos of himself arriving at the scene, describing the attack as an "affront to our humanity." The governor's spokesperson said the atmosphere in the community remains tense, with grief and fear evident. Many families have abandoned their homes over concerns of further attacks.
