The Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has issued a warning regarding potential terror attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festive season. The alert was announced in a statement released on Monday, May 24, by the operation's spokesman, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.
According to the statement, credible intelligence indicates that remnant Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements may attempt to exploit the festive period to launch attacks against civilian targets. These attacks could involve suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), particularly in areas with high population concentrations.
Public Safety Guidelines
The theater command has advised the public to take several precautionary measures. First, they recommend conducting Eid prayers and festivities as close to homes and familiar localities as possible, avoiding large open gatherings where feasible. Second, individuals should exercise heightened vigilance in crowded public spaces such as markets, motor parks, banking halls, and prayer grounds.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
The command further urged the public to report any suspicious persons, unattended objects, or unusual movements to the nearest military checkpoint, police station, or civil-military liaison point immediately. They also emphasized the importance of cooperating fully with security personnel during patrols and screening operations.
Additionally, the public is advised to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly at night or in areas with limited security presence. The theater command also called on the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or rumors that could cause public panic.
Community Engagement
Traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organizations, and community stakeholders have been urged to actively engage their communities and encourage the timely reporting of credible security information before and during the celebration period.
Operation HADIN KAI has reassured all residents of the North East that troops are on standby, fully prepared, and firmly in control of the situation.
