The United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD) has publicly endorsed the deepening military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, stating that the joint operations are proving to be a strategic and effective tool in the fight against terrorism.
Diplomatic Endorsement for Strategic Partnership
This significant diplomatic backing was announced in Abuja on Monday, 6 January 2026, during the presentation of an Assessment Report on the Ongoing War Against Terrorism in Nigeria. The event was co-organized by the UN-WCD and the International Institute of Experts on Political Economy and Administration (IIEPEA).
The Secretary-General of UN-WCD, H.E. Amb. Prof. Tunji John Asaolu, presented the findings. He stated that the security partnership has substantially strengthened counter-terrorism efforts in major conflict zones. Crucially, he highlighted that these intensified joint operations have been conducted with strict adherence to international rules, resulting in no recorded civilian casualties.
"We commend the United States military and the Nigerian Ministry of Defence for the successes recorded so far," Asaolu said. "The collaboration has weakened terrorist structures and improved operational coordination."
Calls for Sustained Action and Institutional Integrity
While acknowledging the progress, the diplomatic body pointed to isolated attacks, like the recent bandit assault in Kasuwan-Daji, Niger State, as evidence that the threat persists. They emphasized the need for sustained action and stronger institutions to fully dismantle terrorist networks.
The report recognized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's strong political will in addressing insecurity. To build on the gains from international cooperation, the UN-WCD called for greater strategic alignment within Nigeria's defence architecture.
In a notable recommendation, the diplomats urged President Tinubu to consider redeploying the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to another portfolio. They clarified this was not a punitive measure but one aimed at boosting public confidence, accountability, and operational efficiency in the anti-terror war.
"The integrity of Nigeria’s defence institutions is non-negotiable," Asaolu asserted. He stressed that continued international support, particularly the Nigeria–US military alliance, remains vital for achieving a final victory over terrorism.
International Support Echoes from US Congress
In related developments, the cooperation received further praise from US Congressman Rep Riley Moore. In an interview on Fox News, Moore commended Nigeria's partnership with the United States. He also affirmed the US commitment to ending the persecution of Christians by ISIS and its affiliated groups.
