Badminton player Blessing Isaac, a native of Taraba State, has earned a coveted spot to represent Nigeria at a major continental tournament. The athlete from Karim Lamido Local Government will compete at the 2026 All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Botswana this February.
From Local Courts to National Camp
Isaac's selection to the national team is the result of a series of strong performances in competitions both within Taraba State and beyond. Her rising profile as one of Nigeria's promising talents was cemented in 2025 when she won a gold medal at the National Universities Games (NUGA) in Jos, Plateau State. Following her selection, she has been invited to join the national team's camping program to prepare for the continental showdown against Africa's best players.
State Support and Send-Off Ceremony
During a special send-off ceremony held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, the Taraba State Sports Commission demonstrated its backing for the athlete. The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. George Haruna Shitta, praised Isaac for her discipline and consistent results. He assured her of the state government's continued support, calling her achievement a source of pride for Taraba.
As a tangible show of support, the Commission presented Isaac with a cash gift and branded sports uniforms. Officials stated this gesture reflects the state's commitment to nurturing talent at the grassroots level.
Words of Encouragement and a Pledge
The Chairman of the Taraba Veterans Badminton Club, Mr. Chindo Audu, urged Isaac to remain focused and determined as she carries the hopes of the state and nation. "We are sending you out to represent us. Please do your very best," Audu said, encouraging a confident and winning mindset.
Mr. Polycarp Stephen Adi, the State Coordinator of NG-Cares, commended the Taraba State Government for its sustained investment in sports development, noting that such support yields positive outcomes. He advised the athlete to maintain discipline and focus in the lead-up to the championship.
In her response, Blessing Isaac expressed deep gratitude for the support received. She revealed that her badminton journey began between 2014 and 2015, and she developed through mentorship from her coach and senior players. The athlete pledged to give her absolute best at the continental event, determined to make Taraba State and Nigeria proud on the African stage.
