Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will feature at the National Sports Festival for the first time following its successful outing at the 15th Biennial Police Games held in Asaba, Delta State. Officials of the Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation described the development as a major step forward for the sport’s recognition and growth in the country.
Breakthrough at Police Games
A board member of the federation, CSP Kalu Chijioke Erem, said the inclusion was made possible through sustained support from the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies. He noted that MMA had previously appeared as a demonstration event at the 14th edition of the Police Games in Ibadan, Oyo State, before becoming a full medal event at the latest edition in Asaba. According to him, the progress reflects growing institutional backing and efforts to position the sport within Nigeria’s formal sporting structure.
Institutional Support
Chijioke said the Police Force had contributed to the expansion of MMA through the creation of its internal association, support for championships, and promotion of athletes who have represented the country internationally. He named Juliet Chukwu, Juliet Ukah, and Ewah Bernard among athletes who have helped raise the profile of the sport through recent performances. He added that the federation expects further progress under the current leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
“Institutional backing has been critical in building credibility, attracting talent, and positioning Nigeria on the global MMA stage. The former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described the initiative as ‘visionary leadership in combat sports development.’ Police athletes Juliet Chukwu, Juliet Ukah, and Ewah Bernard have gained global visibility, bringing pride to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. These athletes embody our vision, demonstrating discipline, excellence, and national pride through MMA,” he said.
