MTN Explains Port Harcourt Choice for Golf Classic

Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has explained its decision to hold the recently concluded MTN Prestige Golf Classic in Port Harcourt, stating that the event was designed to strengthen ties with its high-value customers and the golfing community.

The tournament took place at the Golf Section of the Port Harcourt Club, drawing top players from the host club and neighboring golf clubs.

Platform for Networking and Collaboration

During the trophy presentation ceremony over the weekend, the General Manager of Regional Operations for the South-South region, Ifeanyichukwu Udom, highlighted that the tournament serves as a platform to deepen customer engagement, networking, and collaboration.

Udom emphasized that many strategic corporate decisions are often initiated on golf courses rather than in boardrooms, making the sport a vital avenue for relationship-building among business leaders and stakeholders.

“The Golf Classic is one of those platforms for our high-value customers and the golfing community to socialise, network and collaborate,” she said.

“The reality is that a lot of important decisions are not necessarily made in the boardroom or offices; many are made on the golf course. So, we are providing that platform for our customers,” she added.

Expansion Plans

Udom disclosed that MTN intends to expand the tournament to accommodate more participants and broaden its customer reach.

“Last year was great; this year is even greater, and we are looking at ways to expand it. There is also a women’s edition coming up later. Beyond golf, we will continue to explore other avenues to connect with our customers,” she stated.

Winner’s Experience

The overall winner of the 2026 MTN Prestige Golf Classic, Ochade Ajabor, described the competition as a memorable experience. Representing Rumuokwurushi Golf Club, Python Golf Club, and Port Harcourt Golf Club, Ajabor expressed excitement over her victory and commended MTN for organizing the tournament.

“I’m elated. It has been a wonderful experience. I came out here to relax and enjoy myself, and I’m rewarded with this beautiful win. I truly appreciate MTN for this gesture and the tournament,” she said.

Ajabor secured the win with 42 points, edging out the first runner-up by a single point. As the overall winner, she received a trophy and an all-expenses-paid trip to watch the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in the United Kingdom. Other winners also received trophies and prizes.
