Favour Ofili Reclaims Top Spot in Nigeria's 200m Rankings with 22.46s Run
United States-based sprinter Favour Ofili has reclaimed her position at the top of Nigeria's 200m rankings for the 2026 season, clocking a time of 22.46 seconds at the Tom Jones Memorial meet over the weekend. The performance occurred in the Women's 200m Olympic Development event, where Ofili finished third in her heat despite facing a challenging -2.0 m/s headwind.
Impressive Performance Amidst Tough Conditions
Running into adverse wind conditions, the 23-year-old athlete trailed behind Adidas teammate McKenzie Long, who won the heat in 22.42 seconds, and Mariah Maxwell, who crossed the line in 22.44 seconds, with both times being wind-aided. Ofili's effort was sufficient to displace Kelly Ufodiama, who previously held the Nigerian lead with a time of 22.53 seconds, solidifying Ofili's dominance in the half-lap race.
Since 2021, Ofili has consistently ended each season as Nigeria's fastest female sprinter over 200 meters, starting with her remarkable 22.23 seconds at the World U20 Championships in Kenya. She remains the Nigerian record holder in the event with a personal best of 21.96 seconds, showcasing her enduring prowess on the track.
Commonwealth Games Aspirations and Nationality Switch
Ofili is expected to represent Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, following World Athletics' rejection of her request to switch nationality to Turkey. This decision reaffirms her commitment to competing under the Nigerian flag, adding significance to her recent performances as she prepares for international competition.
Other Nigerian Athletes Shine at Tom Jones Invitational
In other events at the Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Nigerian sprinters also made their mark:
- Olayinka Olajide ran a wind-aided 22.76 seconds to place ninth overall in the Women's 200m Invite.
- Success Oyibu posted a wind-assisted time of 22.99 seconds, finishing 16th.
- Esther Joseph clocked 23.09 seconds with wind assistance, securing 21st place.
Meanwhile, in the men's events, reigning Nigerian 100m champion Israel Okon powered to victory in the men's 200m Invite, clocking an impressive 20.27 seconds with a +1.6 wind assistance. This performance not only secured the win but also stands as both the Nigerian and collegiate lead for the 2026 season, highlighting the depth of talent in Nigerian athletics.
As the track and field season progresses, Ofili's consistent performances position her as a key contender for Nigeria in upcoming competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, while other athletes like Okon demonstrate the nation's strong presence in sprint events globally.
