At least two people died from suffocation during massive celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico advanced to the FIFA World Cup round of 16, the city government said in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1.
Victims identified
A 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation, Mexico City’s health secretary said, after huge crowds gathered to celebrate the national team’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador. Emergency responders were unable to revive them.
Location of the incident
The incident occurred on Hamburgo and Lancaster Streets, near the Angel of Independence landmark, where thousands of soccer fans had gathered to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 32.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities have not confirmed the death of a third person, reported by local media. They said investigations are continuing.
Historic win
The celebrations came after Mexico beat Ecuador to record their first World Cup knockout win since 1986, sending the co-hosts into the round of 16. More than a million people gathered in the streets of Mexico City, mainly around the Angel of Independence monument, according to estimates by the city government.
