British heavyweight boxer of Nigerian descent, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from a hospital in Lagos State. This follows a tragic road accident in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.

Joshua Deemed Fit for Home Recuperation

The Ogun and Lagos state governments issued a joint statement confirming the development on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Authorities stated that the 36-year-old former world champion was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. The statement described Joshua as being "heavy-hearted" over the loss of his friends in the incident.

The fatal collision occurred on Monday, December 29. Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Ogun State, near the border with Lagos.

Final Respects for Departed Friends

According to the government update, before his discharge, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos. They were there to pay their final respects to his two departed friends, identified as Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami. The bodies were being prepared for repatriation scheduled for that evening.

The boxer had been under observation at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, for minor injuries sustained in the crash. His promoter, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, had earlier confirmed his hospitalisation for monitoring.

Governors and President Acknowledge Public Support

The joint statement was signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and Kayode Akinmade, Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. It expressed condolences to the families of the deceased foreign nationals.

The statement further revealed that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deeply appreciated the public concern and show of affection following the accident. They also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly support throughout the process.

The governments commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, stating: "The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable."
