Celebrity Boxing Trend Grows in Nigeria: Carter Efe Defeats Portable

The concept of celebrity boxing, while not entirely new, continues to gain momentum globally. In Nigeria, this trend is taking root alongside other combat sports variants, drawing attention to the struggling state of professional boxing. Assistant Sports Editor Gowon Akpodonor reports on the evolving landscape.

Global Rise of Celebrity Boxing

Celebrity boxing has existed for decades, primarily limited to charity events and novelty TV shows. However, its popularity has surged recently, exemplified by the proposed cage fight between Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla founder Elon Musk in 2023. Although the match never happened, it highlighted the concept's widespread appeal.

Notable bouts include the 2024 matchup between 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Celebrity boxing now serves as a platform for settling scores and generating income, blending high-stakes drama with amateur athleticism.

Regulation and Structure Abroad

In the United Kingdom, celebrity boxing is structured as regulated, charity-focused events requiring trained coaches, medical examinations, and strict safety protocols. In contrast, the United States treats it as a high-revenue entertainment product, bridging professional sports and influencer culture. The market was valued at over $7.7 billion in 2025.

Notably, the 2020 fight between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. became one of the top-selling boxing cards in history. Celebrity boxing now attracts younger audiences and generates substantial betting and sponsorship revenue.

Celebrity Boxing in Nigeria

In Nigeria, celebrity boxing has evolved into a commercial entertainment phenomenon featuring influencer matchups and grudge fights. These events often arise from social media feuds and draw viewers who typically avoid traditional boxing.

On May 2, 2026, Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, faced comedian Carter Efe in a bout titled "Chaos In The Ring" at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Portable, who had previously defeated actor Charles Okocha in December 2023 and Speed Darlington in April 2025, suffered his first defeat via unanimous decision.

Mixed Martial Arts and Dambe

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is also gaining traction in Nigeria, with the African Knockout Championship hosting fighters from 18 countries since its formal start in May 2023. The sport's popularity was boosted by Nigerian UFC champions Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman.

Dambe, a centuries-old Hausa martial art, is experiencing a resurgence through the Dambe Warriors League, which introduced weight classes, three-round matches, and safety protocols. Views grew from 200,000 in 2017 to over 24 million in 2019, with 60% from outside Nigeria.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Professional boxer Oto 'Joe Boy' Joseph expressed that celebrity boxing does not diminish professional boxing. He noted that Nigeria lacks promoters for professional boxing, which remains neglected despite its potential. He praised the organization of the Portable vs. Efe fight, citing the large crowd and excellent packaging.

While celebrity boxing sparks interest, it also faces criticism for diluting the sport's integrity and posing health risks. Experts advise strict training and safety measures. Nonetheless, the attention and money generated by these events are undeniable.
