A Nigerian woman who was present at the scene of the tragic car accident involving British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has provided a chilling eyewitness account of the events that unfolded on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitness Recounts the Tragic Moment
Oluwatobiloba Olabisi Babalola stated that she and her husband were fixing a flat tyre on the side of the road when the high-speed collision occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025. According to her description shared in a Facebook comment, the accident happened "like a flash" and the experience was akin to watching a horror film.
The accident involved an SUV carrying the former world heavyweight champion and two members of his team. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck at high speed, resulting in a fatal outcome.
Fatal Consequences and Survivor's Condition
Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of two key members of Joshua's team. Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, and Latif "Latz" Ayodele, his fitness trainer, both died in the accident.
Anthony Joshua himself survived the crash and is reported to be in stable condition with minor injuries. A lawyer's viral social media post suggested that Joshua's survival may have been due to his seating position behind the driver during the impact.
Public Reaction and Road Safety Concerns
The news of the accident has sparked significant reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing their condolences and raising concerns about road safety on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Several commenters pointed to the dangers posed by stationary trucks parked along the highway. One netizen, Edmund Ebipulou Ebiware, shared a personal tragedy, revealing he lost his brother and cousins in a similar accident in 2002. He called for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to address the issue of trailers parked close to the road.
Other reactions highlighted possible causes. An eyewitness told the BBC that wrongful overtaking was a factor, as the truck involved was not moving. Another commenter, Michael Hamilton, referenced the sometimes reckless driving culture associated with official convoys, urging drivers to use their judgment.
The incident has reignited a crucial conversation about infrastructure and safety measures on one of Nigeria's busiest highways, even as the nation mourns the loss of two sports professionals and celebrates the survival of its boxing icon.
