Analyst Urges FIFA to Consider Nigeria for Iran's Vacant 2026 World Cup Spot

A prominent public commentator and former president of Nigerians in the United Kingdom, Benjamin Kuti, has publicly advocated for Nigeria's Super Eagles to replace Iran in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This appeal follows Iran's official withdrawal from the prestigious tournament, which is scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June to July 2026.

Iran's Withdrawal Amid Conflict

Iran announced its decision to pull out of the World Cup on state television on March 11, 2026, citing the assassination of its leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in fatal airstrikes by Israel and the United States. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali stated, "Given that this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, we cannot participate in the World Cup under any circumstances." Reports indicate that over 1,300 people, primarily civilians, have been killed in Iran since the airstrikes began on February 28, 2026.

Kuti's Proposal for Nigeria

Reacting to the development, Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby, took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) page to express his views. He wrote, "If Iran is not going to the World Cup, maybe @FIFAWorldCup should consider giving the spot to an African country. Nigeria is on my mind. If an opportunity opens up, it would be great to see another African nation step in and represent the continent proudly. Just saying, Nigeria wouldn't be a bad choice at all." Iran was drawn into Group G for the tournament alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand, with matches set in Los Angeles and Seattle in the US.

Nigerians Await FIFA Decision on DR Congo Controversy

Meanwhile, there is a mix of hope and frustration among Nigerian supporters as they await FIFA's ruling on allegations that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during Africa's 2026 World Cup play-offs. The Congolese team defeated the Super Eagles on penalties in November 2025 to secure a place in an intercontinental qualifier. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) submitted a complaint to FIFA in December 2025, arguing that DR Congo players such as Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were ineligible due to Congolese law not allowing dual citizenship.

FIFA, led by Gianni Infantino, has confirmed that the matter is under review but has not provided a timeline for its decision. Some fans remain hopeful for a lifeline, while others question the credibility of the appeal. Additionally, reports suggest that Véron Mosengo-Omba, the secretary-general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from DR Congo, is working against Nigeria's petition, adding pressure to the situation.

Unlikely Replacement Scenario

Despite Kuti's hopeful suggestion, it is highly improbable that Nigeria will replace Iran in the 2026 World Cup. Typically, when a team withdraws, FIFA allocates the spot to another team from the same confederation. In this case, Iran's vacancy would likely go to another Asian team, such as Iraq or the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, Nigerians continue to hold out hope for the Super Eagles' participation in the global event.
