Algerian international Rafik Belghali has publicly addressed the controversial post-match scenes involving Senegalese referee Issa Sy, following Algeria's elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Desert Foxes saw their tournament journey end in the quarterfinals after a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria's Super Eagles at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday, January 10, 2026. The match's conclusion was marred by Algerian players confronting the officiating team and chasing them toward the tunnel, an act that could invite sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Belghali's Version of Events
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the 23-year-old Hellas Verona defender sought to clarify his actions, which were captured on video. Belghali firmly denied any aggressive intent towards referee Issa Sy.
"I've seen the video circulating after the match and understand how it can be perceived without full context," Belghali wrote. He explained that his initial move was to approach the official for a post-match handshake, a gesture he says was rejected. "His reaction surprised me, and in the heat of the moment, I followed him briefly to ask why. There was no aggression or intent to confront."
The Algerian squad's frustration reportedly stemmed from a first-half incident where they felt they should have been awarded a penalty. Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box, but referee Sy waved play on.
An Apology and a Look Forward
Despite maintaining his innocence regarding the alleged attack, Belghali took responsibility for allowing the situation to escalate in the emotional aftermath of a high-stakes knockout game.
"However, I take responsibility for allowing the situation to continue longer than it should have in an emotional moment after an intense match," he stated. The former PSV Eindhoven player emphasized his respect for match officials and committed to higher standards. "I respect match officials and the game, and I’m focused on continuing to grow as a professional and representing my club and country with responsibility and discipline."
Belghali featured in all five of Algeria's matches at AFCON 2025, receiving one yellow card during their Round of 16 victory over DR Congo.
Nigerian Fans and Mahrez React
The incident and Belghali's explanation sparked significant reactions online, particularly from Nigerian fans who celebrated their team's victory. One user, @Cybereagles, commented: "The referee picked up your sarcasm the same way we picked it up... Good move though... it distracted the fans from attacking you guys." Another, @BluEyeJyde, added: "It's almost as if it's sacrilegious for them to lose to Nigeria, a better team."
Separately, Algeria's captain Riyad Mahrez conceded that Nigeria was the superior side on the day. While he also pointed out that referee Issa Sy's performance was not flawless, Mahrez acknowledged the Super Eagles' quality that secured their place in the semifinals.
The focus now shifts to potential disciplinary proceedings from CAF, while Nigeria prepares for their next challenge in the tournament.
