Eric Chelle Reveals Heart Surgery Behind Viral AFCON Water Incident
Chelle: Heart Surgery Caused Viral AFCON Water Moment

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has finally broken his silence on the viral video from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that showed him being repeatedly doused with water on the touchline. The incident, which many fans misinterpreted, was actually a precautionary measure linked to a serious health challenge.

The Real Story Behind the Viral Water Moment

The unusual scene unfolded during the tense quarter-final match between Mali, then coached by Chelle, and the host nation, Ivory Coast, at AFCON 2023. As clips circulated online, many spectators believed the coach was being cooled down due to the heat of the moment after his team's heartbreaking elimination via penalty shootout.

However, in a recent interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, widely quoted by outlets including BSN Sports and The Observer, Chelle revealed the shocking truth. The coach disclosed that he had undergone cardiac surgery in France shortly before the tournament began.

"Everyone calls me 'water man' because of that match. Do you know the story behind that?" Chelle said. "Before the tournament, I had surgery in France due to a cardiac problem. These were issues relating to that which led to them pouring water on me, to revive me."

The water was a precautionary measure from his assistant medical team during moments of extreme pressure, intended to help stabilize him given his recent health history.

A Calmer Chelle at AFCON 2025

Now at the helm of Nigeria's Super Eagles for AFCON 2025, Chelle says he has adopted a completely different and more composed attitude. His team topped their group with a perfect record, defeating Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Chelle, who was recently named in the Team of the Group Stage, emphasized his calm demeanor as Nigeria prepares for their Round of 16 clash against Mozambique in Fez.

"There is a lot of pressure for sure, but I’m calm, I’m cool; the players are good. I can say that I am calmer than I was during the last AFCON," he stated.

He explained that his focus is now entirely on his players' attitude and ensuring everyone performs at their peak. "I have to be very focused on the players' attitude and their behaviour. This is the best time for that. We need to have everybody at 100%," Chelle added.

Injury Updates and Knockout Preparations

In other news, Coach Chelle provided updates on his squad's fitness following the group stage. Earlier reports confirmed he gave the latest injury news on two players after the 3-1 victory over Uganda.

The coach also confirmed that the team is enjoying a focused environment in Fez, Morocco, despite the cold weather, as they train for the crucial knockout phase of the tournament.
