Chelsea Release Statement on Enzo Maresca's Departure to Manchester City
Chelsea Statement on Enzo Maresca's Exit to Man City

Chelsea Football Club have released a detailed statement addressing the circumstances surrounding Enzo Maresca's departure, following his appointment as Manchester City's new manager. The Italian tactician resigned on January 1, 2026, after 18 months at Stamford Bridge, during which he secured two trophies: the 2025 UEFA Europa Conference League and the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.

Resignation, Not Dismissal

The club confirmed that Maresca submitted his resignation abruptly on New Year's Day, contrary to media reports suggesting he was fired. Chelsea acknowledged they were aware of the possibility that Maresca might replace his mentor Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, but remained calm given his lengthy contract.

His departure disrupted Chelsea's season; his replacement, Liam Rosenior, lasted only four months before being sacked, with Calum McFarlane stepping in as interim manager.

Compensation Settlement

In a statement on their official website, Chelsea noted: "In the circumstances and given the mutual respect between clubs, a confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City, which includes the payment of compensation. A confidential settlement has also been reached with the former Head Coach under which he will pay compensation."

BBC Sport confirmed that Manchester City will pay Chelsea a £17 million fee as part of the settlement.

Xabi Alonso Appointed

Chelsea have already moved on, appointing Spanish manager Xabi Alonso, who will officially take over on July 1 after leaving Real Madrid in January. The statement added: "Looking forward to next season, in Xabi Alonso, we have a Manager who has an exceptional football mind and is a professional of the highest integrity. He has all the attributes to deliver the success the Club's supporters deserve and expect." Alonso's appointment was confirmed less than 24 hours after Chelsea lost the 2025/26 FA Cup final to Manchester City on May 16, 2026.

Financial Impact

Chelsea's season fell apart after Maresca's resignation, leading to a 10th-place finish and failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The club faces significant financial losses next season as a result.
