A passionate outcry from a Nigerian football supporter has ignited discussions about potential officiating bias following the Super Eagles' heartbreaking exit from the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria lost their semi-final clash against host nation Morocco in a penalty shootout on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Fan's Detailed Allegations of Unfair Play
In a viral TikTok video posted shortly after the match, an unnamed Nigerian fan launched a scathing critique of the match officiating, spearheaded by Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea. The fan described the encounter as a "firsthand robbery," arguing that key decisions unfairly favoured the Moroccan team.
The analysis pointed to two critical moments. First, the fan claimed a Moroccan player avoided a clear yellow card for an offence that went unpunished. Second, and more prominently, he highlighted the controversial booking of Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey.
According to the fan and match replays, it was Moroccan forward Brahim Diaz who pulled Bassey's shirt, yet the referee penalised the Super Eagles player and showed him a yellow card. This decision, which should have been a foul in Nigeria's favour, significantly impacted the game's flow during a promising counter-attack.
"Morocco No Get One Yellow Card!"
Expressing his frustration, the fan emphasised the disciplinary imbalance during the 120 minutes of play. "You look this match wey Morocco play like this... you see 120 minutes of what you watch, Morocco no get one yellow card. One!" he exclaimed in the video. This perceived lack of punishment for the host team's infractions formed a core part of his bias argument.
While placing substantial blame on the officials, the supporter also offered a critique of the Nigerian attack. He noted that strikers Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen were too hesitant and failed to capitalise on half-chances. In contrast, he praised the performances of defenders Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi, calling them the team's best players on the night.
A Call for Nigeria to Host Future AFCON
The fan's conclusion extended beyond the match itself, touching on a perceived pattern in the tournament. He cited past victories by host nations, stating, "The way the AFCON is going now, it is the hosting team that are winning it."
His final message was a direct appeal to the Nigerian government. He urged authorities to work towards hosting a future AFCON edition, suggesting that home advantage is now a crucial element for success. "If you want to win the AFCON, you host it," he stated. "Work on the country so that we can go and host our own. Let us rob our own robbery too... so that they will favour us, so that we can win."
The video has resonated deeply with a segment of the Nigerian fanbase, reflecting widespread frustration over the semi-final exit and lingering suspicions about impartial officiating in high-stakes continental matches.
