Darren Fletcher Calls Man Utd Coaching Role 'Beyond Wildest Dreams'
Fletcher: Man Utd Job Beyond My Wildest Dreams

Manchester United's newly appointed interim manager, Darren Fletcher, has said the chance to lead the club is an honour that surpasses his "wildest dreams." The former United midfielder stepped into the role following the dismissal of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim after a turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford.

Surreal Honour and Immediate Focus

Addressing the media for the first time ahead of his team's Premier League clash with Burnley, Fletcher described the situation as "surreal." He admitted that even during his playing days, he never imagined being in this position. "It's an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team," Fletcher stated. "I don't even think it was in my wildest dreams that it was something that could potentially happen."

While acknowledging the unexpected and uncomfortable circumstances of his appointment, the former Scotland international emphasized his immediate responsibility. "I've got a job to do. I've got to lead the team and take great pride in doing that," he affirmed, shifting all his concentration to the upcoming match.

No Thoughts on Permanent Role, Squad Updates

When directly questioned about the possibility of taking the managerial job on a permanent basis, Fletcher was unequivocal. "Honestly, it's not something I've thought about," he said, citing the speed of recent events. His discussions with the club's hierarchy have reportedly centered only on the immediate task: preparing for Burnley.

Fletcher did provide a squad update, expressing hope that captain Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount could return to a squad depleted by injuries and international duty. However, he playfully declined to confirm whether his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, would make their full debuts in the match.

United's Standards and Future Plans

The five-time Premier League winner under Sir Alex Ferguson is acutely aware of the expectations at a club that has not won the league since 2013. "Everyone expects Manchester United to be at the top and winning. That's the standard we all have to try and achieve," he remarked.

Outlining his vision, Fletcher said he wants to field a team that reflects the club's proud identity. "I want a Manchester United team that fans can be proud of, that I can be proud of. I believe in the players. We've got quality, we've got players who care," he explained.

Fletcher is expected to remain in charge only until a caretaker manager is appointed. The club plans to name a permanent successor to Amorim at the season's end. Reports indicate that preliminary talks regarding the caretaker role have involved Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United currently sits sixth in the Premier League table, three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, making every match crucial in their quest for Champions League qualification.
