Four Foreign-Born Talents Poised for Super Eagles Debut Before 2027 AFCON
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who led Nigeria to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has received a renewed mandate from the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation to continue his role. With the 2027 AFCON co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania on the horizon, Chelle is actively evaluating potential new additions to the squad.
Since taking over from technical director Augustine Eguavoen in January 2025, Chelle has witnessed a surge in interest from foreign-born Nigerian players eager to represent the national team. His tenure has already seen success, including victory at the 2025 Unity Cup in Brentford, though the team narrowly missed qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, eight foreign-born players were part of the final 28-man squad.
1) Tosin Adarabioyo: Chelsea Defender on Nigeria's Radar
Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo has been a target for the Super Eagles for over two years, despite his past with the England U21 team. After the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Adarabioyo hinted at possibly playing for Nigeria, though he has not made a definitive commitment. Reports suggest Chelle might call him up for an upcoming four-nation friendly tournament in Amman.
Adarabioyo's recent performance in Chelsea's FA Cup win over Wrexham was exceptional, with 169 touches and 15 ball recoveries, setting new club records. His addition could bolster a defense that already features Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, and Benjamin Fredrick.
2) Arthur Okonkwo: Goalkeeping Prospect from Wrexham
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, now with Wrexham AFC, switched his international allegiance to Nigeria last year and could debut in upcoming friendlies. At 24, Okonkwo previously played for England's U18 team but has not appeared for the senior side. He impressed in Wrexham's FA Cup draw against Chelsea, potentially challenging Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie for the starting goalkeeper spot.
3) Carney Chukwuemeka: Midfield Creativity from Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is being actively persuaded by the Nigeria Football Federation to switch allegiance from England, where he has represented the U21 team. The 22-year-old could inject creativity into Nigeria's midfield, complementing players like Alex Iwobi and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and possibly serving as a long-term replacement for captain Wilfred Ndidi. This season, he has scored two goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances.
4) Kevin Martins: Following His Father's Legacy
AC Monza forward Kevin Martins, son of Super Eagles legend Obafemi Martins, is eligible to play for Nigeria despite featuring for Italy's U15 team. He may choose to commit his international future to the Super Eagles, continuing his family's legacy in Nigerian football.
Additional Note: Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has expressed interest in meeting with Coach Chelle to discuss his potential role with the Super Eagles. The 21-year-old has been in strong form this season and is keen to represent Nigeria at the international level.
