IOC OKs World Boxing Olympic Weights for LA28

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially endorsed the Qualification System developed by World Boxing for the boxing competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28). This approval marks a significant milestone in the sport's Olympic journey.

Gender Parity Achieved

Under the newly approved system, a total of 248 places will be available at LA28, making it the first Olympic Games in history to achieve gender parity in boxing. The competition will feature seven weight classes each for men and women, contested by 124 male and 124 female athletes respectively.

Men's Weight Categories

The men's division includes the following weight classes and available spots: 55kg and 60kg (18 spots each), 65kg and 70kg (20 spots each), as well as 80kg, 90kg, and 90+kg (16 spots each). This allocation sums up to 124 spots for male boxers.

Qualification Pathway

The Qualification System comprises three global competitions and five continental events, providing boxers with up to four opportunities to secure a place at LA28. The entire qualification pathway and the boxing competition in Los Angeles will be overseen and managed by World Boxing, which is the International Federation for boxing recognized by the IOC.

The first qualification event will be the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan. This will be followed by five continental qualifiers scheduled in 2027 and 2028. The path to LA28 will conclude with two final world qualifiers in 2028, ensuring a comprehensive and fair selection process for all athletes.
