Morocco FA Refuses to Host African Tournaments After 2025 AFCON Controversy
Morocco FA Refuses to Host African Tournaments After AFCON Saga

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has declared that it will cease bidding to host major African football competitions, following the contentious events surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Background of the Controversy

Senegal had defeated Morocco 1-0 at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, with midfielder Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in the 94th minute. During the match, Senegal temporarily walked off the pitch after referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty to Morocco for a challenge by defender El Hadji Malick on Brahim Diaz. Diaz attempted a Panenka, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved comfortably.

Despite Morocco's defeat on the field, the CAF Appeals Board later awarded the title to the Atlas Lions via a 3-0 walkover, a decision that ignited widespread debate across African football. Senegal has since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn the ruling.

Morocco's Decision

FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa confirmed that Morocco will no longer submit bids to host African competitions. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Lekjaa stated: "Starting today, Morocco will no longer submit any bids to host African competitions, regardless of their nature. If other countries wish to organise them, we wish them the best."

Lekjaa emphasized that Morocco has no employees at CAF headquarters and no representation in its committees. He dismissed claims of favouritism, asserting that the only advantage CAF has given Morocco is hosting tournaments that no other country wants to organize.

Impact on African Football

Morocco has been a key host for various African tournaments, including futsal and women's competitions. Some observers fear that without Morocco's willingness to host, these events may face challenges. Social media reactions have been mixed, with some thanking Morocco for its contributions and others questioning its motives.

Morocco is also set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
