Oliseh Advises Portugal to Limit Ronaldo's Minutes

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has shared his perspective on Cristiano Ronaldo's role with Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, proposing that the veteran forward should not be expected to play full matches. Ronaldo, now 41 years old, is participating in what is likely the final World Cup of his illustrious career.

Oliseh's Advice on Managing Ronaldo

Speaking on the Global Football Insights show, Oliseh argued that Portugal would benefit from using Ronaldo in shorter bursts rather than relying on him for the entire 90 minutes. The former Juventus midfielder praised Ronaldo's ability to adapt his game over the years but noted that age has inevitably changed his impact on matches.

“Ronaldo is exceptional, but he's gone from being a great dribbler to being a fox in the box. He's adapted his game to fit his age. He's very fit. But at the World Cup, they don't need the fox in the box anymore,” Oliseh stated. “I think it's better he plays 35 minutes where he can give 100% than try to play through 90 minutes and not be at his best. This team is very young and creative, so they need movements in attack. He's taking a place that's very strategic.”

Portugal's Draw Against DR Congo

Portugal's 1-1 draw against DR Congo intensified scrutiny on Ronaldo's performances. Joao Neves gave Portugal the lead with a header, but Yoane Wissa equalized for DR Congo before halftime. Despite dominating possession, Portugal struggled to create clear chances, sparking debate about Ronaldo's role in the team's attacking flow.

Oliseh believes modern football requires more movement from strikers and hinted that Portugal may need to make difficult decisions. “Strikers don't have to always wait for balls in the modern age. He has scored loads of goals, but there's a reason they tell footballers to start writing footballers when they get to 33. You cannot think you want to play forever. At some point, he has to stop,” the 1994 AFCON winner concluded.

Ronaldo Responds to Criticism

Ronaldo faced criticism after the draw, with some questioning his influence as captain. He appeared frustrated during the match, often showing irritation with teammates. Despite the scrutiny, Ronaldo moved to project unity within the squad, sharing a training-ground photo on social media with the message that Portugal are “always united.” He also posted, “Focus on what you can control.”

With Portugal still chasing World Cup glory, the spotlight remains on their iconic captain and how coach Roberto Martinez chooses to deploy him in upcoming matches.
