Former England international Jay Bothroyd has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo's performance for Portugal in their FIFA World Cup 2026 match against DR Congo, calling the star forward a "hindrance" to the team. The comments came after Ronaldo's lackluster display, which saw him manage only 25 touches, three off-target shots, and a single duel won, as reported by ESPN FC.
Messi's Hat-Trick Raises Expectations
All eyes were on Portugal's Group K match after Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick for Argentina against Algeria earlier in the tournament. The comparison between the two football legends has been a recurring theme throughout their careers, and Ronaldo's subdued performance drew sharp criticism.
Bothroyd's Verdict
Speaking on Sky Sports, Bothroyd stated, "I have to be honest. I think if Ronaldo is a team player, he should step down and understand that he has to be a player that comes off the bench as an impact player." He expressed doubt that Ronaldo would accept a substitute role, adding, "I look at Ronaldo and, you know, the Ronaldo faithful are going to hate me today. But it looks like it's all about him. He's always chasing Messi all the time."
Bothroyd acknowledged Ronaldo's remarkable career and evolution from a left winger to a striker but insisted that currently, "He's becoming more of a hindrance for Portugal than a help." He criticized Portugal manager Roberto Martinez for not making a tough decision, noting that while Ronaldo is considered one of the best goalscorers, "if he doesn't score, he doesn't do anything else."
Ronaldo's performance against DR Congo was one of his least involved World Cup games, with the second-fewest touches he has ever recorded in a World Cup start, highlighting his limited impact on Portugal's attacking play.
