Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has issued a determined promise to the Nigerian football faithful, vowing to deliver the Africa Cup of Nations trophy when the tournament is held in East Africa in 2027.
Building on AFCON 2025 Bronze
This bold declaration comes on the heels of Nigeria's third-place finish at the just-concluded AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Under Chelle's guidance, the team secured the bronze medal after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the playoff match.
The Franco-Malian tactician acknowledged that the team's performance in Morocco, particularly their improved style of play, has been recognized by supporters. Despite the disappointment of not lifting the trophy and missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, fans have shown overwhelming support for Chelle to remain at the helm.
Chelle's Relief and Renewed Determination
In a revealing interview with Canal+ Sport Afrique, Chelle admitted that his continuation as coach was contingent on that crucial third-place win. "It's true that if we hadn't finished third, it would have been difficult for me to continue, even as a coach, you know," he stated.
He expressed a mix of pride and relief at the outcome, sharing a personal anecdote about promising his parents the trophy. "I went to see my mom and dad, and told them I was coming back with the AFCON trophy. Mom, Dad, sorry, I'm only coming back with third place, but that's already exceptional for me," Chelle said.
Encouraged by the players' efforts, which he described as a "wonderful gift," Chelle is now fully focused on the future. He praised Morocco's organization of the tournament and immediately set his sights on the next edition.
The Pamoja 2027 Target and NFF Backing
"Thank you to this country for organising this AFCON so well. I had a lot of fun with my team. It was great. Thank you. It was extraordinary. And we'll meet again in two years, and God willing, I'll bring that trophy home," Chelle concluded with a firm promise.
The 2027 AFCON, dubbed Pamoja 2027, will be a historic event co-hosted by three East African nations: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This marks the first three-nation co-hosting in the tournament's history and its return to East Africa since 1976.
Chelle's future appears secure, with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau confirming the federation's intention to continue with the coach. Gusau cited the team's performance and the strong backing from Nigerian fans as key factors in this decision.
As the Super Eagles turn the page, the mission is clear: convert the promise of 2025 into the ultimate prize in 2027.
