Nigeria's AFCON 2025 Hopes Hit as Midfielder Akinsanmiro Misses Training
Super Eagles Midfielder Misses Training Before Algeria Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt a fresh fitness worry just days before their crucial Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match. Promising midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro was absent from the team's light training session in Marrakesh, casting a shadow over Nigeria's preparations for the clash against Algeria.

Akinsanmiro's Training Absence Explained

According to team sources, the 21-year-old Pisa midfielder, on loan from Inter Milan, was advised by the medical team to skip the session. Reports indicate he is managing minor health issues, with the local weather conditions in Morocco also playing a contributing factor in his current condition.

The team doctors have, however, moved to allay major fears, stressing that the situation is not considered serious. They expect the young player to resume training ahead of the high-stakes match scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026. Akinsanmiro is yet to make his tournament debut at AFCON 2025, having missed all group stage matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and the Round of 16 victory over Mozambique.

Coach Chelle Has Depth in Squad, Says Expert

Despite the concern, Nigerian sports journalist Wale Quadri believes the team is well-equipped to handle such setbacks. In an exclusive comment, Quadri highlighted the depth available to coach Eric Chelle.

"Eric Chelle has loads of replacements and his selections to the Africa Cup of Nations were top notch," Quadri stated. He also expressed hope for Akinsanmiro's swift recovery, acknowledging the player's potential: "Many of us expected Ebenezer Akinsanmiro to play against Mozambique but he was unused. I hope he gets well soon because the young player is very promising."

High-Stakes Quarterfinal in Marrakesh

The upcoming match in Marrakesh is a highly anticipated rematch. It marks the first meeting between Nigeria and Algeria since the 2019 AFCON semifinal, where a Riyad Mahrez free-kick secured a win for the Desert Foxes, who eventually claimed the bronze medal.

Both teams enter this quarterfinal unbeaten in the tournament, having each recorded four consecutive wins. Nigeria is chasing a fourth continental title, with momentum from a resounding 4-0 win over Mozambique, featuring goals from Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams.

The Super Eagles are already without the services of Cyriel Dessers and Ryan Alebiosu due to injury, making squad fitness a critical focus. Veteran defender William Troost-Ekong has reportedly urged the team to seize the moment and complete their mission in Morocco, following the heartbreak of losing the 2023 final.
